Climbing high for a good cause - Piopio Fire Brigade

From 'Birdtalk' June, July 2019

For the third year running, Piopio Volunteer Fire Brigade joined the annual Sky Tower Stair Challenge held in Auckland on May 18th. Racing up 51 flights of stairs, Sandy Pari, Steve Brough, Rowan Moorhouse, Andrew Downey and Anson Clapcott outdid themselves and beat their previous times.

More importantly they also raised funds for leukemia and blood cancer research and support. Quiz nights, sponsorship and raffles let the community participate and show support.

The climb was also an opportunity to educate people about these two diseases.
The atmosphere around the Sky Tower always buzzes with excitement and nerves. This time is also a chance to reflect on those who have passed away from, or live with, leukemia or blood cancer. Photos of loved ones gone, young and old, encircle the tower’s base.

1000 firefighters from all over the world come together for one cause. Our Piopio Fire Brigade and the community all got on board and supported the goal of raising over one million dollars. This year $1.3 million was raised – it will go toward research and support for families who have suffered or live with leukemia or blood cancer.

The Piopio Volunteer Fire Brigade thanks all those who supported them and the sponsors who donated money, especially Progress Transport, Stoked & Huhu, King Country Honda, Ravensdown, Barrowcliffe Shearing, Piopio PGG Wrightsons, White Ridge Contracting, Te Kuiti New World, The Fat Pigeon, The Night Owl, Bradcock Contracting and the Speedy Family. We would also like to give a shout out to our wives and families for organising fundraisers, and for all the time spent away training.

Keep an eye out for us next year!
