Fat Owl spreads its wings

WHAT’S in a name? Who-whoooo knows? (‘scuse the owl-related pun).
Previously known as the Night Owl Bar & Eatery and Owls Nest Motel, this business will now be known as the Fat Owl Motel, Bar and Eatery.

The 10-room motel which was previously the Piopio Hotel, was lovingly refurbished and opened its doors on 12th June 2012. Soon after, the restaurant side received a makeover and has since flourished under Melanie and Ross Simpson’s ownership.

Ten years later in December 2022, Deiresa Ratima became a business partner with the Simpsons, and is managing the Fat Owl Motel, Bar & Eatery.

Piopio born-and-bred, Deiresa first worked with Melanie at the Fat Pigeon Café for seven years, working her way up to Kitchen Manager. Since then she and her family have lived in Hamilton, then Australia, and in July 2021 Melanie enticed Deiresa back to Piopio with the offer of managing the Ruru St business.

Being an accomplished restaurateur, Deiresa is passionate about creating delicious homemade fare, in comfortable surrounds, and all the while providing excellent customer service.
