Museum adds new artwork of history
Following the article in the June/ July issue of the Bird Talk, the trustees of the Piopio Museum are pleased to announce that the proposed picture, recording the visit of the Austrian Naturalist Andreas Reischek to Piopio district in 1882 is now hanging in the settlers hut.
The information accompanying the oil painting is in three languages, English, German and Maori. The German version was translated by Monica Louis, of the Art-Doc Gallery in Benneydale. The Maori content was translated by Tuti Hinekahukura Barrett-Aranui of Mokau.
There is also a map of a probable route taken, on horseback, by Reischek guided by the son of the chief Hemara te Rerehau, from Mokau, via Herangi, Mairoa, Piopio (Te Miro-a-Huiao leaving the district by Manga whainga, Kahuwera, Oparure and onto Otorohanga.
Smaller pictures and information have been supplied to the Hobbit tourist venture of Warrick and Susie Denize and also to Monica Louis at Benneydale to direct anyone interested to the Piopio Museum.
I am hoping this presentation of local history will be viewed by local people and tourists to our area.
