Piopio Lions Celebrate 50 Years

PIOPIO LIONS Club recently celebrated its 50th Reunion with a finger-food lunch and get-together held at the Fat Owl. It was a most enjoyable day.
As usual Deiresa, Melanie and staff did a wonderful job of the catering, food displayed beautifully and flowers on the tables. Snow Nicol cut the cake which was organised by Mary Spellman.

Around 70 ex and current members and their partners attended, with five of the original foundation members present ... Snow Nicol, John Spellman, Peter Walker, Mike Wagstaff and Ian Walsh, who were able to speak on the early years of the Lions Club.

It was a great afternoon with lots of reminiscing and some great tales told about the running of the merry-go-round and the 50cc motorbike rides. In todays world health and safety would have had a heart attack if they knew of some of the antics and near misses had back then.
Snow Nicol paid special tribute to Wally MacDonald and Bruce Thomson in relation to the building of the merry-go-round and the original caravan. How things changed – we are so lucky to have the new modern caravan we have today. The new shed for the caravan now has the driveway done and is looking very smart. Because of Covid we were short of funds to complete this project but thanks to a donation from David Bevege and the Council this is now complete. Special thanks to Bob Dawson for all the work he has put into this project and the new caravan.

The Fieldays are on November 30 to December 3. We will be taking our caravan and the Club will be supported by local fundraising groups. This will be our first big fundraiser since Covid, so we hope this all goes well.

The Senior Citizens Christmas function will not be held this December due to the workload of the Fieldays, but a function will hopefully be held in early 2023. We will keep you posted.

We will probably be holding our Paddys Market Auction around April next year. So keep this in mind if you have anything you can donate for us to auction.

Our club is always looking for new members so if you think Lions is something you could be part of, please contact one of our members:
