First Gas Mokau Bone Carving Symposium

First Gas Mokau Bone Carving Symposium
Date: Friday, 2nd April to Monday, 5th April 2021
Time: 6pm Friday Start
Location: Mokau Hall

The bone carving symposium has gathered momentum over the last five years and is now a national event attracting over 40 carvers from throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Nowhere else will you see such a large gathering of carvers and it is right at your back door. Come and meet the carvers in a relaxed setting and see them working their magic. Entry is free and they will have their unique treasures for sale.

Friday night kicks off at 6pm with a shared community dinner and a keynote address by professional artist Daniel Ormsby of The Red Shed, Waitomo. Carving will take place from 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday and till noon on Easter Monday. This year’s special guest carver is Fumio Noguchi from Nelson, one of New Zealand’s most admired bone carvers. Also making guest appearances are Owen Mapp and Steve Myhre, two more of New Zealand’s best.

Adjoining the symposium is the Mokau pop-up craft market to add even more value to your trip.

We wish to thank Waitomo District Council for its generous financial support through the Creative Communities scheme. Through this arts funding initiative, Waitomo District Council has nurtured Mokau Bone Carving to the point that it now runs independently with its own corporate commercial sponsor, First Gas.
