Mokau Fishing Club news

Birdtalk Magazine Dec 2023 & Jan 2024
HI ALL,
Hope you all have had a chance to get the line wet over the last month as we finally have had some good seas and settled weather with longer sunshine hours. There have been some reports of big snapper being caught on boats and off the beach over the last couple of weeks with everybody enjoying a feed.

Our Ice Breaker competition was a great event, good numbers again to support comp and a fantastic turn out at the pub for prizegiving It was also great to catch up with everyone, although a shame about the sea for the boats as only a handful braved the conditions to cross the bar, but we had some good fish weighed. Congratulations to the anglers that took prizes away.

Thank you to our major sponsor Hynds and the Awakino Hotel for hosting us again for the Ice Breaker comp, and of course our awesome committee for putting the event together.

Some of the committee met with the Waikato Regional Council to discuss displaying signage to make people aware of the bar and channel changes. The plan is to have some better signage up before Christmas. We also discussed displaying new 5-knot signs between Bridge and Flowerpot – the speed restriction has always been there as you all know, but we are seeing some boats not slowing down in these areas. Please, if you see boats not slowing down, politely mention to the skipper as they most probably aren’t aware.

Before you head out, it would be advisable to continue checking channel/bar at low tide as it is moving all the time.

The best thing about Christmas is the “Xmas Fishing Competition”
– well some of us would agree. This year is our 10th anniversary of this comp. The committee have discussed, and we have added some new prizes up for grabs to celebrate the event. Tell your mates and family to get involved. The comp is spread over four days starting 27th Dec with over $15,000 worth of prizes, and it also gives you the excuse to get away from those family relatives you may have had enough of, haha! Details and entries are all on our website www.mokaufishingclub.co.nz so get amongst it. Enter early to be in the draw for two early bird draw prizes plus a cheap entry fee to be part of our 4-day comp, along with a BBQ at prizegiving and a chance to take home one of 60 major prizes or a spot prize.

Reminder: Subs for club are due 1st December online via website www.mokaufishingclub.co.nz – invite your mates to join. This will allow anglers to weigh fish for honours board and enter summer comp starting 31st Dec until Easter. It also allows you to be part of our fantastic club and meet up during summer months for a free BBQ and a fair bit of banter.

If you are looking for an awesome Christmas present for Mum, all our Merchandise is online. We have some new hats on there – perfect to fill the stockings.
– check it out! (Orders to be collected via Melissa once ordered – she might even gift wrap it for you).

If you require any help online with your entries for this comp or paying subs please contact one of the committee and they will be happy to help you.

Well, that’s about it from me. I hope you all are getting your tackle sorted and the fridge stocked for Christmas. The committee look forward to seeing everybody at the Xmas comp, it’s going to be a biggie

Kind regards,
Wal
